This was not the finest hour for my grandparents (or my mother), but it all ended well. I love the wording in the clipping – “stray baby.”
The baby was my mother, Harriet Duncan. The town was DeKalb, Illinois. About 1916.

Who was Mrs T. H. Hobbs? Did she run the restaurant or was she babysitting? It is an odd phrase “she asked if a baby had been seen.” It sounds like she was the one looking for the baby. If your grandmother lost the baby, why didn’t she call the police?

The wording is odd. I don’t know who Mrs. Hobbs is – I just know there was a Hobbs family in town. Maybe it’s just small town stuff. Maybe it was an “I thought you had her” situation. Mom didn’t tell me more. And I didn’t know enough to as!

I just read the article again this morning and it intrigued me. It does seem like there is more to the story.
